THE MALDIVES
The Maldives offer you one of the last dive and surf paradises on this planet.
Only 220 of total 1198 islands are inhabited by locals and about 90 islands are used for tourism. More than one fourth of the 400.000 Maldivians live in the capital Male.
The Maldives can be divided in local islands and hotel or resort islands for tourists. In the past, tourists were only allowed to visit local islands within guided tours from island resorts. The new president of the Maldives has finally changed this.
With us you can experience the whole range of spending time in the Maldives, either in Hotel Resorts, on Local Islands or on Safari Boats. We are looking forward to arrange your individual Maldives experience.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE MALDIVES
Geography: The Maldives consists of approximately 1.190 coral islands grouped in a double chain of 27 atolls spread over roughly 90.000 square kilometers, making the country one of the most unique destinations in the world. The islands stretch over a distance of 700 km from north to south.
Climate: The temperature of the Maldives ranges between 24 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Although the humidity is relatively high, the constant sea breeze helps to keep the air moving. The average sea temperature is 26 degrees Celsius.
South-west monsoon is from Mai to October, north-east monsoon is from November to April.
Intensive rain showers in June and July can result of the south-west monsoon.
Main-season for tourists is November to April, but best waves are in off-season (May to October).
Population:The population of the Maldives has increased rapidly during the last few decades. However with a population of approximately 320.000 the country still remains one of the smallest independent nations in the world.
Religion: Maldivians are devout Muslims and rigorously follow the basic tenets of the Islam. The Islamic Center which accommodated more than 5.000 worshippers dominated the skyline of the capital city Male with its shining golden dome and minaret.
Culture: A proud history and rich culture evolved from the first settlers who were from various parts of the world travelling the seas in ancient times. The Maldives has been a melting pot of different cultures as people from different parts of the world came here and settled down. Some of the local music and dance for instance resembles African influences, while other cultures and traditions reflect East Asian and South Asian characteristics and traits.
Language: Dhivehi, spoke throughout the Maldives, is a language belonging to the Indo-Iranian group of languages. The language is spoken only in the Maldives and Minicoy Island in the Lakshadweep Atoll (India) to the north of the Maldives. The present script Thaana was introduced in the late 16th century and is written from right to left. English is widely spoken by Maldivians and visitors can male themselves easily understood.
